Other Pests and Diseases

While FAW is a serious pest in the region there are other serious crop pests and diseases that can impact the sustainability of our food systems. 

Armyworms

Larvae of Spodtopera species are often called armyworms because of their behaviour of moving across food sources in large numbers in an army-like fashion. As larvae, they can quickly consume available food sources resulting in considerable damage.  FAW is not the only serious armyworm found in Southeast Asia and it's important to be able to identify and manage them all as part of a sustainable integrated management approach to crop health and protection. Spodoptera littoralis is a transboundary pest that is not currently reported present in Southeast Asia  - and we would like to keep it that way! Let's continue to be observant and watch our for this very serious pest.

Palm pests & diseases

Palm pests and diseases are a serious problem across Southeast Asia. In 2024, a serious of webinars were held to draw further attention to important work being progressed on these pests and diseases in partnership with the Pacific Island countries.

Stem borers

Stemborers are serious pests in Southeast Asia that cause significant damage. In some cases, maize stemborers cause more damage to maize than FAW.
